PENYELIDIKAN OLEH UPM TERHADAP FORMULA WAUW
The mineral composition of mineral waters varied according to the geographical location or the source where it is derived from [3]. The concentration of the selected minerals in Air Titis Wau was compared with national and international standards and found to be in the acceptable recommended range where available. The results were also similar to the previous findings which reported Na, Mg, F and Cl content among 13 brands of mineral waters in Malaysia ranges from 2.4-23.68 mg/L, 0.72-24.03 mg/L, 0.13-2 mg/L or trace, and 28.02-58.58 mg/L or trace [4], respectively except for K and Ca. The K content found in Air Titis Wau was lowered than previous findings (0.6-5.95 mg/L) whereas the Ca content is higher than previous
findings (0.59-25.06 mg/L). The recommended nutrient intake (RNI) of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium is 1000 mg/day, 350 mg/day, 1500 mg/day and 4700 mg/day, respectively for adults in Malaysia [5]. Therefore, the consumption of 3L of Air Titis Wau would fulfil 9.7%, 6.1%, 1.8% of RNI, respectively for calcium, magnesium, and sodium whereas the contribution for RNI of potassium is minimal.
Results
The effect of different percentage of Air Titis Wau on cell viability is shown in the following graphs.
Discussions and ConclusionThe undiluted (100%) and diluted Air Titis Wau of 80% and 90% did not seems to support the growth of the cells where the percentage of cell viability was less than 50% after 72 hours. However, 40-70% of Air Titis Wau improves the cell growth in which the percentage of cell viability was more than 100% after 72 hours. The presence of minerals in Air Titis Wau might explain the differences in cell viability as compared to deionized water which is devoid of minerals.<br>
